Biography

I’m Myrlie, I am a licensed psychotherapist with the Quebec Order of Psychologists (OPQ) and a social worker and couple and family therapist with the Quebec Order of Social Workers and Couple and Family Therapists (OTSTSCQ).

I hold a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Concordia University, a Master’s in Social Work (MSW), and in Couple and Family Therapy (CFT) from McGill University. I aim to approach counseling from an anti-oppressive and collaborative lens that recognizes the place of structural oppression in mental health challenges.

I also hope that my career will allow me to uplift BIPOC & LGBTQ+ communities by advocating for people whose voices have traditionally been ignored and overlooked, and also by showing clients that Black mental health professionals exist and are working to reduce harm for the populations that they serve.

My experience includes telephone counselling, wellness advising, case management, and providing individual, couple, and family therapy as a clinical intern and private practice clinician under supervision. Throughout my career, I hope to be able to continue offering quality counselling to marginalized populations and ethnic communities.

Working with a systemic and attachment-focused framework, I have supported clients with depression, anxiety disorders, interpersonal difficulties, emotional dysregulation, conjugal violence, and complex trauma. As a private practice clinician, I work towards empowering, supporting and critically exploring individuals, couples, and families in a therapeutic capacity.

I have had the privilege of supporting young adults from neurotypical and neurodivergent backgrounds and using self-empowerment approaches to support their sense of self, agency, confidence, socializing, and communication skills.

With couples and families, I make efforts to support them with rebuilding trust, healthy communication, conflict resolution, boundaries, as well as challenges and hardships that may reinforce negative patterns of conflict to allow for healing within their couple and family dynamics. By exploring personal narratives/histories and shared experiences, I provide all clientele with psychoeducation to enhance their insight regarding interpersonal relationships and attachment concerns.

This includes further exploration of the family system, personality traits, beliefs, values, identities, and various other risk and/or protective factors that may impact the issue they present with.

I believe in the use of humanistic, warm, nonjudgmental, and compassionate-based approaches as this tends to support the clients’ capacity to continue examining the perspectives, attitudes, and behaviours associated with their objectives, goals, and needs.
